An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a nine-digit number issued by the IRS to individuals who are required to have a U.S. federal tax identification number but do not have and are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN). This includes non-resident aliens required to file a U.S. tax return or filing to claim a refund or report income, resident aliens who meet the substantial presence test but are not eligible for an SSN, and certain dependents or spouses of U.S. citizens or resident aliens, among others.
A Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) is authorized by the IRS to facilitate the application process for ITINs and EINs for foreign individuals and other non-U.S. persons. A CAA has the authority to submit Form W-7 to the IRS on behalf of an applicant without requiring the applicant to send original supporting documents. The CAA verifies the applicant’s identity and foreign status and submits a certification instead of the original documents.
To apply for an ITIN, you must provide documentation that establishes both your identity and your foreign status. Acceptable documents include passports (which can stand alone), USCIS photo IDs, visas, U.S. or foreign driver’s licenses, U.S. or foreign military IDs, national ID cards, birth certificates, medical records (for dependents under age 6), and school records (for dependents under age 24 if they are students). At least one document must contain a photograph, unless the applicant is a dependent under age 14 (or under 18 if a student). Original documents will be returned by mail to the address listed on your Form W-7. Alternatively, you can apply in person at an IRS-designated Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC), or through an Acceptance Agent (AA) or Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA), who can verify your documents so you do not have to mail the originals.
For tax years after 2017, spouses and dependents are generally not eligible to obtain or renew an ITIN unless they are claimed for an allowable tax benefit or they file their own tax return. Spouses and dependents must be included on an attached U.S. federal tax return and must include the appropriate schedule, form, or check the box on the return that applies to the allowable tax benefit.
If you are applying for a new ITIN, you generally must complete and attach Form W-7 to the front of your tax return and submit your application package with your return by the tax filing deadline. If you cannot file your tax return on time, you should request an extension. If you meet one of the exceptions to the tax return filing requirement, you may submit Form W-7 at any time.
If you are renewing an existing ITIN, you must submit your Form W-7 renewal application with your U.S. federal tax return using one of the specified filing methods.
If you do not renew an expired ITIN and file a tax return using that ITIN, there may be a delay in processing your return.
